It appears that Cameron’s attempt to hug Toynbee has largely backfired. A survey published today on the ConservativeHome website (and reported in the Observer) has revealed that there has been an increase in the level of dissatisfaction Tory grass-roots have towards the leadership. According to the survey, which received more than 2,000 respondents “67% of members are satisfied with his performance (26% very satisfied, 41% fairly), the number dissatisfied has increased from 24% to 32% over the last month. 15% of this dissatisfied number are 'very dissatisfied'”
Dissatisfaction towards Cameron amongst the grass-roots appears to be rooted in the leadership’s failure to address core issues of concern to party members. It must also be stressed that the recent comments made by Greg Clark (a key policy adviser to Cameron), that the party should ditch Churchill in favour of Toynbee may also have contributed to the upsurge in dissatisfaction towards the Cameron leadership.
As side note, the ConservativeHome Survey coincides with the YouGov opinion poll (published on 1st December in the Daily Telegraph), which shows little evidence of positive enthusiasm for either David Cameron or the party under him (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/12/01/ntory101.xml).
