Scott of the Antarctic
While I appreciate the enormous sacrifice Captain Scott (and his team) has done; losing his life in the process, I am somewhat baffled at the suggestion that his Antarctic hut should be persevered. On the face of it, it seems a reasonable request to make; he did after all trek through one of the world’s most arduous places and in the process helped to further our collective knowledge of the terra incognito. However, the cost to preserving his wooden, dilapidated hut will cost in region of £13 million (this is the figure quoted by the New Zealand Government). Surely, £13 million could be best spent on improving the country’s vital services or at best allocate the money to finance future expeditions (which I think would be most appropriate in honour the memory of such a courageous explorer).
